Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) is a disciplined approach to developing and launching new products which has been developed and published by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG). Although the specific AIAG guidlines were developed for the Automotive Industry, it is equally applicable to any new product development or product improvement activity. As AIAG states, some of the benefits of Product Quality Planning are:

  • Effective allocation of resources to satisfy the customer.
  • Promote early identification of required changes.
  • Avoid late changes which can be very costly.
  • Provide a quality product on time at the lowest cost.

The level of complexity of the APQP process for any given organization will be in part dependent on the size and complexity of the organization, the complexity of the product, and the risk associated with poor product quality.
