Mistake-Proofing
Because it is not possible for a person to perform a task hundreds or thousands of times without making a mistake, it is often advisable to design mistake-proofing into the product or process. Evidence of mistake-proofing surrounds us in our everyday lives. From the buzzer or bell that activates in our car if we leave our lights on or the keys in the ignition, to the different sized prongs on common electrical plugs, we experience mistake-proofing every day, usually without realizing it. Whenever a customer-critical characteristic requires that a person performs a repetitive task, defect-free, over a long period of time, the process should be mistake-proofed in order to insure defect free delivery of products and services. Mistake-proofing can be applied to both manufacturing and service processes. Consider the addition of visual displays at drive-through restaurants that allow the customer to see the order entered and make corrections if necessary. The use of pick-lists for database entry is another example of mistake proofing in a service process, customer service, or order-entry.
